These classes take your newly acquired (or already there) skills a step further. Let’s explore knitting on double pointed needles, to knit in the round. Knitting experience on double points, as homework is required for this class.
Socks on DPNs (one 3-hour class)
Requirements: You must have completed Beginning Knitting, or be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and pick up stitches, and be able to knit on double pointed needles.
Supplies: You are required to provide the following supplies for this class.
- Approx. 400 yards of worsted weight yarn of your choice
- Size 5 double pointed needles, preferably wood
Description: In this class, we will start knitting a pair of “boot” socks in an average woman’s size. We’ll be using a worsted weight yarn, so these socks will be a bit bulky for standard shoes, but they’ll be great slipper socks for those cold floors!
Homework: With worsted weight yarn, cast on 48 stitches. Divide onto three needles (16 sts. per needle) being careful not to twist the stitches! Knit in K2P2 rib for 1-1/2 inches. Continue sock leg by knitting every round (creates stockinette stitch) and knit until sock measures 5 to 6 inches total (you can also knit the entire top of the sock in ribbing if you choose). Leave the stitches on the needles and bring this to class.
Top Down Baby Sweater (Two 3-hour classes)
Requirements: You must have completed Beginning Knitting, or be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and pick up stitches.
Supplies: You are required to provide the following supplies for this class.
- Approx. 400 yards of worsted weight yarn of your choice. As this pattern is for a baby/toddler, a soft blend, or acrylic yarn is recommended.
- Size 6 straight needles
- Size 6 24″ circular needle
- Two different colors of stitch markers
Description: This class presents the option of knitting a sweater from the top down. There is very little finishing with this technique. Beginning knitters can successfully complete this class. We will start at the collar, increase along a raglan line, finish the sleeves, and then complete the body of the sweater. All bands and buttonholes are knit as we go! You will be on your own finishing most of the sweater, but I will be available by phone, or in person before or after other classes to assist. You will receive handouts for a hooded sweater option, and instructions on how to resize, as well as patterns for an American Girl or Barbie doll.
Homework: Cast on 48 stitches. Knit 20 rows of garter stitch, slipping the first stitch of each row as if to purl with yarn in front. Move yarn to back between needles and knit to end of row. Leave on needles and bring to class.
